MRT Follow-up

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

  1. Just when you are about to leave a company, all hell will break loose.

  2. When you get hired for job X and you know that the job description will be Y, you'll be asked to do Z instead.

  3. Do not let management know that you know how to do Y if your real job is X. Otherwise, you'll be assigned to do X and Y (for the rest of your stay/career) without any salary increase.

I'm not a technician. I don't know how to fix hardware. It's starting to get really hard just trying to stay sane with all those computer problems that can easily be resolved by formatting the OS they call Windows. Viruses and malware are a PITA but I have to deal with them everyday since almost everyone uses Windows. I'm glad my computer (also a dev server) can sit happily for days/months without a reboot. It's a pity I can't say the same for the users...

And they call me a system administrator, btw.

Offer to help him out if he brings his PC to your house

Definitely works.

They figure its easier for YOU to come over to their place than it is for them to:

1. unplug everything
2. bring it to your place
3. set it up
4. wait while you fix it
5. unplug everything
6. bring it back home
7. set it up

... because they don't value YOUR time as highly as they value THEIR time.

I've seen systems sit on the floor for half a year in other people's homes, inoperable, because people are too lazy to bring them over, so they use this as an excuse to buy a new one ...

Wait long enough, and those systems become yours for free. Great for spare parts.

If my salary gets delayed this coming pay day, I'm going to submit a resignation letter next week.

I just want to get some more rest. Hopefully the trip to Baguio would be more than enough.
